Insects in the city are seemingly negligible, even despised, rejected, or captured. People associate them with filth, diseases, decay and other repulsive things, and hence often try to keep them out of sight. Unknowingly, men have classified species into different categories. Some are regarded as more important, some are neglected. The artwork, comprised of graphics of various sizes and shapes that put the valued critters alongside the ignored, probes into the relationships between urbanites and creatures around them. The use of brightly colored canvases and pigments gives rise to a touch of artificiality. One of the principal pieces depicts an old dog Wong-jai in real size. Wong-jai is reared by residents on the island of Tung Ping Chau and a familiar feature for visitors. Though with a cystic tumor on its face, Wong-jai creates a strong contrast with a cheerful and care-free demeanour that seems to indicate it is totally unaffected by the affliction. Different critters are featured in other paintings – swallows, bats, spiders, each accompanied by various kinds of insects. Two of these paintings are even created on insect-attracting canvas.
